Virtual Reality for the Treatment of Anxiety Disorders

What is Virtual Reality and Virtual Reality Exposure?

CAAT also offers a virtual reality program for the treatment of anxiety disorders. This program is based on cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), which is an efficient treatment mode for anxiety disorders. Virtual reality treatment aims to reduce and eliminate dysfunctional anxiety symptoms.

Like CBT, virtual reality exposure allows a therapist to gradually expose a person to fear-provoking stimuli. The treatment is carried out through computer-generated situations known as virtual environments. Virtual reality exposure uses small screens placed inside a pair of glasses (called a virtual helmet or a head-mounted display), where the person is gradually exposed to their fear.
